Betty Rooney Powell, 89, of Taylor, peacefully fell asleep on Tuesday at her home surrounded by her loving and devoted family.
Betty was a faithful parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish, a member of the Taylor Senior Citizens and Taylor American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She was especially proud of her Irish heritage and how active she was in politics, serving as the Democratic committee chairwoman for many years. Her family was everything to her and they brought her much joy and happiness.
She was born to the late John and Ellen Legg Rooney and was a 1948 graduate of Taylor High School. Surviving are a son, John Powell and husband, Oscar Marin, Bloomfield, N.J.; four daughters, Sharon Wozniak, Titusville, Fla.; Ellen Pietrowski and husband, James, Taylor; Shannon Cosminski and husband, Greg, Ponte Vedra, Fla.; and Erin Powell and wife, Kat, Bloomsburg; three devoted grandchildren, David Wozniak and wife, Kelly; Michael Pietrowski and Connor Mailen; two great-grandchildren, Sabrina Powell and Brendan Wozniak; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Powell; a grandson, James P. Pietrowski Jr.; a brother, John "Jack" Rooney; a son-in-law, David H. Wozniak; and a sister, Genevieve McCann.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the care and love they provided Betty. The family would also like to thank mom's hairdresser Nancy Argust who treated Betty like a member of her family and always made Betty look beautiful.
Family and friends are invited to attend Betty's funeral which will begin on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. from the Semian Funeral Home LLC, 704 Union St., Taylor, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, by the Rev. Francis Pauselli and the Rev. Kenneth Seegar. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
