Eleanor A. Mahalidge Castelli, 90, 0f Scranton died peacefully on Thursday, March 26 at Regional Hospital of Scranton after a brief illness. Her beloved husband of 33 years, Alphonse Vincent Castelli preceded her in death on January 29, 2015.
Born in Jessup, Pennsylvania on January 30,1930, Eleanor was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna Ridosh Mahalidge.She was a graduate of Jessup High School. She worked as a seamstress at Barbizon Factory in Jessup before making a career change in her life. In 1965, she enrolled in Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and became a licensed Practical Nurse. Eleanor worked for more than three decades as a nurse and respiratory therapist at Mercy (Regional) Hospital and enjoyed that work immensely. A devoted Catholic Eleanor was a former member of St. Mary’s Assumption Church in Jessup, St. Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton and Immaculate Conception Church in Scranton. After her nephew, Father Francis Pauselli became the pastor of the now Divine Mercy Parish, Eleanor and Al became members there.She was an active parishioner at Divine Mercy as a member of the Adult Choir, an aide at the Parish’s annual vacation Bible School each July, volunteered at the annual Picnic at Divine Mercy each June, Divine Mercy Table and the Divine Mercy Bereavement Group. First Fridays, luncheons and other parish events were a regular part of her life.After her retirement she was devoted to her husband and his home care following a series of health problems. She was always worried about her family and friends especially when they traveled. For those she talked with frequently Eleanor was never short on advice or guidance. Eleanor was a strong willed, opinionated woman who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
In addition to her nephew, Father Francis, she is survived by her nephews Robert Mahalidge (Christine), Archbald, Edward Mahalidge (Leann), Clarks Summit;nieces Marie Lubash (Michael), Woodbridge, Virginia, Jodi Tomassoni (David), Archbald, numerous great nieces and nephews; a stepson, Joseph Castelli, Drums; stepdaughter Denise Castelli Bova, Sun City Center, Florida, four step grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her four sisters, Mildred A. Pauselli, Pauline Heller, Ann Marie Prybicien and Marion D. Mahalidge,her brother Joseph Mahalidge, a step daughter Roseann Pagotto and her nephew Joseph Mahalidge III.
Eleanor’s family is grateful to the staff of the Emergency Department at Regional Hospital and to the doctors and nurses at the Intensive Care Unit of Regional Hospital, especially Amanda. Thank you also to Diane Walsh for your kindness to Eleanor. May God bless all of you.
Private family entombment was held at Cathedral Mausoleum, by the Rev Francis L. Pauselli. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis Street, Scranton at a later date and time to be announced.
