George R. Coombs, 74, of Dallas and formerly of Taylor, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, August 3, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. He is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Walsh Coombs and together they were blessed to have celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary on July 21, 2021.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles Coombs and Elizabeth Roberts. A United States Navy veteran, George honorably served his country for twenty-three and a half years, including his tour of duty in the Vietnam War. Throughout his time in the service, he was decorated with numerous medals and commendations. Upon his honorable discharge, George achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class. After his career with the Navy, George worked for the United States Postal Service for twenty years.
Throughout his life, George traveled extensively with the Navy and later with his wife, Shirley. He enjoyed woodworking and was a former member of the Taylor Hose Company #2. Brandy and Bailey, his two Shih Tzu's brought him much joy and comfort. George was a devoted husband, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, who will be dearly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Charles and wife, Jeannie of Lancaster, PA; sister-in-law Linda Valenta and husband, Joseph of Dallas, PA; nieces, Denise Valenta of Dallas, PA; Cheryl Sromovski, husband, Tom and their two children, Chase and Jade of Dallas, PA; Candice Van Etten and husband, Scott of Charlotte, NC; Sandy Emerich and husband, David and Connie Intrieri of Lancaster, PA.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Therese's Church, Shavertown, PA by the Rev. James J. Paisley, Interment with military honors will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
