Helen Macik Gowka, 96, of the Lincoln Heights Section of Taylor, passed away peacefully, Tuesday May 4, at Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore, with her beloved daughter, Andrea by her side. Her beloved husband, of almost 60 years, Dan, passed away, November 2, 2006.
Born in Taylor, daughter of the late Michael and Mary Hayducsak Macik. Helen was an honors graduate of Taylor High School class of 1941 and was a professional seamstress at Brooks Manufacturing for forty years before retiring. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. George's Orthodox Church, Taylor and was also a member of the altar society. Helen also worked for many years, as a cook at the church events. Her faith and her church were especially important parts of her life. Helen loved animals and she recently rescued the family cat 'Leo". She loved cooking, gardening and walking in the outdoors. Picking mushrooms and canning all her home-grown vegetables brought her much joy.
Surviving is her daughter, Andrea Gowka Karwaski, a grandson, David James Karwaski and partner, Rosz, nephews, nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Evanchik (Wasil), Margaret Geldhauser (Joe) and Marilyn Rinehart (Richard).
Family and friends are invited to attend Helen's funeral, which will be on Tuesday beginning at 8:45 am from the Semian Funeral Home LLC, 704 Union St. Taylor, followed by Divine Liturgy at 9:30 am in St. George's Orthodox Church, 743 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor, to be celebrated by the Very Rev. Mark Leasure, pastor. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 PM at the funeral home.
