Obituary

Helen Shimko Yankovitch, 98, a lifelong resident of Taylor, passed peacefully into eternal life, Friday afternoon at St. Mary’s Villa, Elmhurst Township. Her first husband, Stephen Shimko died January 30, 1951 and her second husband, Stephen Yankovitch died July 18, 1982.

Born June 18, 1921 in Scranton, she was the daughter of John and Mary Gronski Krysiuk. She attended SS Peter & Paul School, and Taylor High School. In her younger years Helen worked in the Garment Industry. A simple lady who was an excellent homemaker and enjoyed making ethnic dishes for her family’s enjoyment. Family was the center of Helen’s life, and she treasured every moment she had with her loved ones. She will forever be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother who was proud of being able to stay home and raise her family and simply enjoyed spending time with them. A devout catholic, she was a longtime member of St. Ann’s Basilica and attended St. Ann’s Novena each year.

Helen’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff at St. Mary’s Villa for the compassionate, loving care they bestowed upon Helen during her stay there.

Surviving are her son, Stephen J. Shimko and wife, Sandy, Jefferson Township; a daughter-in-law, Georgia Shimko, Germantown, TN; Three grandchildren, Stephen T. Shimko and wife, Margaret, Dresher, PA; Daniel Shimko and wife, Valerie, Germantown, TN; Scott Shimko and wife, Colleen, Clarks Green, PA; nine great-Grandchildren, Mikey, Meghan, Connor, Logan, Posie, Will, Miles, Fletcher and Teddy Shimko.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Shimko Feb. 25, 2006 and a brother, Chester Krysiuk.

Family and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Saturday, Feb. 29th beginning at 9:15 am from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St. Taylor with Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Ann’s Basilica, 1250 St. Ann’s St. Scranton. Interment with Rite of Committal will follow in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Taylor. Family and friends may call Friday, Feb. 28th, 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
