Joan M. Filipski, 81, of the Minooka section of Scranton, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, March 31 at the Green Ridge Care Center.
Born in Scranton, she was one of two children, born to the Chester and Josephine Kitlas Filipski. In 1957, Joan graduated from Moosic High School. Throughout her accounting career, Joan worked for ICS, Haddon Craftsman and retired from Scranton Lackawanna Human Development Agency. A devout Catholic, Joan was a longtime member of the former Saint Mary of Czestochowa Church, Moosic and a member of the church's After 50 Club. Following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church, Scranton. Joan enjoyed going out to dinner with her co-workers, spending time at Mohegan Sun casino and spending quality time with her family and friends.
Surviving are cousins, Ann Marie "Mimi" Gajkowski, Rachel Harding, Amy Riehl, Karlie Brace; a sister-in-law, Mary Filipski, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; a niece, Kristin Filipski, Lincoln, Nebraska; nephews, Chad Filipski, East Grand Forks, Minnesota; John, Robert and Joseph Merrick; cousins, Thomas and Ron Kitlas, Charles Hatchko and Edward Kobeski.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Filipski and a sister, Sylvia Merrick.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend Joan's viewing, which will be on Monday from 5 to 7 pm at the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St. Taylor. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Church at St. Paul of the Cross Parish, 1217 Prospect Ave., Scranton, PA 18505, by the Rev. Scott P. Sterowski, pastor. Interment, will follow in St. Mary's Czestochowa Cemetery, Greenwood, Moosic.
