Obituary

Dr. John F. Rooney, affectionately known as “Jack”, 77, of Taylor entered into eternal rest on Sunday morning at his home, with his family by his side. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, the former Kathy Purawic.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Helen Legg Rooney and was a graduate of Taylor High School Class of 1960. He furthered his education at the University of Scranton, where he received his bachelors and master’s degree in education and then ascertained his doctorate from Lehigh University. As Jack began teaching, his first position was at the Greenwood Elementary on Birney Ave, Moosic and then was appointed the first principal of Moosic Elementary. In 1983 he was appointed the superintendent for the Riverside School District, until his retirement in 2001. Jack was also a licensed real estate agent.

He was a member of the Taylor Lions Club, serving as president from 1976 to 1977. A true outdoorsman, Jack was one of the founding members of Oak Hill Rod and Gun Club, where he enjoyed spending quality time with his sons and grandchildren. When his sons were younger, he was a coach for the Taylor Community Center Biddy Basketball League. Jack also played in basketball leagues well into his 30’s. Jack enjoyed going to his camper on Lake Wallenpaupack and traveling the world with his beloved wife, Kathy. His family was the center of his life, sharing precious time on summer vacations to Wildwood Crest, NJ and winters in the Florida Keys. Jack will be remembered for his wit, intellect, sense of humor, contagious laugh, dedication to his family, friends and students, who he influenced throughout his career as an educator.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons; Sean and his wife, Jacquelyn and Eric and his wife Robyn; three grandchildren, Liam, Riley and Declan, all of Spring Brook Township; a sister, Betty Powell, Taylor; nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
